On the sweet and holy occasion of Sri Rama Navami, Bhagawan graciously explains the significance of the Name of Rama.

Tyagaraja derived the name ‘Rama’ from the two letters ‘Ra’ and ‘Ma’ in the two mantras associated with Vishnu and Siva (Om Namo Narayanaya and Om Namah Sivaya). The two mantras, without the syllables ‘Ra’ and ‘Ma’, become meaningless and thus they are the life-giving letters in the two mantras. Rama’s name thus is the life-giving essence of the two great mantras. The term ‘Rama” has another esoteric significance. It consists of three syllables: Ra + A + Ma. ‘Ra’ signifies Agni (the Fire-god). ‘Ra’ representing Agni, the Fire-god, burns away all sins; ‘A’ representing Surya, the Sungod, dispels the darkness of ignorance. ‘Ma’ representing Chandra, the Moon-god, cools one’s temper and produces tranquillity. The name Rama has the triple power of washing away one’s sins, removing one’s ignorance, and tranquillizing one’s mind. How is the profound meaning of this sacred name to be imparted to mankind? This can be done only by the Divine coming in human form and demonstrating to mankind the power of the Divine.

தியாகராஜர், “உன்னை யாரென்று நிர்ணயிப்பது, ராமா? உன்னை யாரென்று நிர்ணயிப்பது?” என்று பாடினார். மேலும், சிவ மந்திரத்திற்கு ‘ம’ என்ற எழுத்தும், மாதவ மந்திரத்திற்கு ‘ரா’ என்ற எழுத்தும் உயிர் போன்றவை. இந்த விவரத்தை அறிந்த ஒருவனை வணங்குகிறேன்” என்றார் அவர். பஞ்சாட்சர மந்திரமான ‘நமசிவாய’ என்பதற்கு ‘ம’ என்ற எழுத்து ப்ராணனாகும். வைஷ்ணவ மந்திரமான ‘ஓம் நமோ நாராயணாய’ என்னும் அஷ்டாட்சர மந்திரத்திற்கு ‘ரா’ என்ற எழுத்து ப்ராணனாகும். ‘நாராயணாய’ என்பதில் ‘ரா’ போய்விட்டால், அது ‘நாயணாய’ – இறந்தவனுக்குச் சமம் என்றாகிறது. ‘ரா’ வந்தால்தான் அது ப்ராணனுடன் கூடியது என்றாகிறது. பஞ்சாட்சர மந்திரமான ‘நமசிவாய’ என்பதில் ‘ம’ என்ற எழுத்து இல்லையென்றால் அது ‘நஸ்சிவாய’ – சிவன் அல்லாதது என்றாகிறது. எனவே, அங்கு ‘ம’ என்பது இருந்தே ஆக வேண்டும். இந்த இரண்டும் சேர்ந்ததே ‘ராம’ என்ற திருநாமம். எனவே ப்ராண ஸ்வரூபமாக இருப்பதே ராமநாமம். ‘ர’, ‘ஆ’, ‘ம’ ஆகிய மூன்று எழுத்துக்களின் சேர்க்கையே இது. ‘ர’ என்பது அக்னியையும், ‘ஆ’ என்பது சூரியனையும், ‘ம’ என்பது சந்திரனையும் குறிக்கும், இந்த மூன்றின் ஏகத்துவமே ராமநாமம். ‘ர’ அக்னியைக் குறிப்பதால், அது அனைத்து பாவங்களையும் எரித்துச் சாம்பலாக்கி விடுகிறது. ‘ஆ’ சூரியனைக் குறிப்பதால் அது நம்முடைய அஞ்ஞானம் எனும் இருளை நீக்குகிறது. சந்திரனைக் குறிக்கும் ‘ம’ என்பது நம்முடைய உணர்ச்சிகளைக் குளிர்வித்து நிம்மதியை அளிக்கிறது. பாவங்களையும், துர்மார்க்கங்களையும், உணர்ச்சிகளையும் தணிக்கவல்ல ஆற்றல் படைத்ததே ராமநாமம். இப்படிப்பட்ட பவித்ரமான நாம தத்துவத்தை எவ்விதத்தில் போதிக்க முடியும்? ஆகவே மனிதரூபத்தில் இவ்வுலகில் அவதரித்து, மனித குலத்திற்குச் சரியான இலட்சியங்களை வாழ்ந்து காட்டியவரே ராமர்.
